The Autism Program of Illinois parters with AMC Theatres

The Autism Program of Illinois (TAP) today announced that it will once again participate in a partnership with AMC Theaters designed to promote Autism awareness among moviegoers across the state of Illinois. April is Autism Awareness Month, and during the month special public service announcements will appear on 167 screens at select AMC Theaters across Illinois.

The public service announcement, entitled “29,000”, informs viewers that 29,000 Illinois children have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The PSAs direct viewers to a new website, www.29000.org, to increase awareness and promote early intervention for children with an ASD.

Help Convince Governor Quinn and Legislative Leaders to Preserve Funding for
Critically-Needed Autism Services in Illinois!

Funding for The Autism Program of Illinois is at risk. Governor Quinn has proposed a 5% cut to the funding of The Autism Program of Illinois. At a time when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are reporting an substantial increase in the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders, a cut to TAP would mean 1,800 fewer hours of direct services to children and 500 fewer parents, professionals and educators trained across Illinois.

Kenny
Kenny is a 16-year old boy with big brown eyes and a wonderful smile. He loves to make new friends.

But Kenny has struggled with moderate cognitive impairment, ADHD and Seizure Disorder-Landau Kleiffer Syndrome for most of his young life. Verbal communication is very difficult for him.

When Kenny was 7 years old, his mother noticed an increase in his aggression – he cried, yelled, hit and kicked when he was angry or if he didn’t get his way. He was asked to leave his school because of his behavior. He often ran away.
