Yesterday, we honored and recognized our teachers for their dedication. Today, we observe Nurses Week, and take a moment to salute those who work so hard to maintain the health of the children we serve.

Jean Watson once noted that “caring is the essence of nursing”. I agree that caring is probably the best description of our talented and dedicated staff of nurses. Members of the Hope nursing staff are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. I think this sentiment really gets to the heart of our educational mission here at Hope. Every day, our teachers work so diligently to nurture the unique potential of every Hope student and prepare them for a future filled with exciting possibilities.

Marissa’s Story of Hope

Marissa is an adorable girl with big brown eyes and the most genuine smile you’ve ever seen.

But because she lives with Down Syndrome, autism and Tourette Syndrome, every day is a significant challenge for her.

Before Marissa came to Hope, her moods would shift violently – from laughing and happily singing, to screaming and swinging her arms wildly at anyone within reach.

Her mother, Carol, is a special education teacher, so she was better equipped than most to care for a child with developmental disabilities. Still, she worried about what Marissa’s future would hold.

2012 Neighborhood Connection 5k

On FRIDAY, June 15, The First Church of the Nazarene, located across the parking lot from the Noll Medical Pavilion will hold its 5th Annual Neighborhood Connection, donating its proceeds to The Hope Institute. Students from Hope will be participating in these events and we encourage you and your family and friends to sign up and/or attend these fun activities that will ultimately benefit Hope.

Noll Dental Clinic gives kids a smile!

For the second year in a row, the Noll Dental Clinic is participating in the American Dental Association’s ‘Give Kids A Smile’ program. The program enhances the oral health of large numbers of needy children and highlights for policy makers the ongoing challenges that disadvantaged families face in finding dental care. As part of the program, thousands of the nation’s dentists and their dental team members provide free oral health care services to children from low-income families across the country.

Hope’s children give back

The children of Hope support the community, too. I’m pleased to announce that Hope’s children have been invited by the Springfield Art Association to participate in the organization’s 2012 Personalities Paint event. Through our Exceptional Arts Program, our children have created beautiful artwork to be auctioned off at the Springfield Art Association event on Saturday.

Will’s Story of Hope

Will joined our Hope Institute family when he was just seven years old. He’d been turned away by four different agencies. His parents were desperate to find a place that could keep him safe and healthy, so that he could focus on learning.

Every day, Will struggles to communicate and control his aggressive behaviors. And, like many children with autism, he has difficulty managing and understanding sensations – certain sights, sounds or tactile sensations can be overwhelming to him.

23rd Annual ABATE Easter Basket Run
